Neurological Care
At Eglinton Healthcare, we offer advanced neurology testing to help diagnose a wide range of nervous system conditions. These tests are used to assess brain activity, nerve function, and muscle response, and are often recommended if you’re experiencing symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, muscle cramps, seizures, or unexplained episodes of confusion or fainting. All neurology diagnostic procedures are conducted on-site in a safe, supportive setting by trained technicians and interpreted by specialists in neurology and neurophysiology. Our goal is to provide timely, accurate insights that help guide your treatment and improve quality of life.

Neurology Diagnostics Tests Available
EMG (Electromyography)
About the Test
Electromyography (EMG) evaluates how well your muscles respond to nerve signals. It helps assess whether muscle weakness or pain is due to nerve or muscle problems.
What to Expect
During the test, a small, thin needle electrode is gently inserted into targeted muscles. The electrode records electrical activity while the muscle is at rest and during slight movement. You may feel brief discomfort or muscle twitching, but the procedure is generally well tolerated. No gel is used, and there is no lasting pain or recovery time needed.
How to Prepare
On the day of your test, do not apply any creams, lotions, or oils to your skin. Wear loose-fitting or short-sleeved clothing. Inform the healthcare provider if you are taking blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, or have a pacemaker or other implanted device.
What It Can Help Diagnose
EMG can help identify the cause of muscle weakness, pain, cramping, or twitching. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions such as pinched nerves (radiculopathy), carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), or muscular dystrophy.
EEG (Electroencephalogram)
About the Test
An EEG measures the electrical activity in your brain using sensors placed on the scalp. It is often used to detect irregular brain wave patterns that could be causing symptoms like seizures, blackouts, or altered consciousness.
What to Expect
You will lie down comfortably while a technician applies small sensors (electrodes) to your scalp using a water-based paste or a fitted cap. You will be asked to rest quietly with your eyes closed. Occasionally, you may be asked to open and close your eyes or perform deep breathing. A flashing light may be used to observe how your brain responds to visual stimulation. The test is completely non-invasive and usually takes 20 to 60 minutes.
How to Prepare
Wash your hair the night before and do not use conditioner, styling products, or oils. Avoid caffeine or energy drinks on the day of your test. Continue taking medications unless told otherwise by your doctor.
What It Can Help Diagnose
EEGs are used to detect seizure disorders, epilepsy, brain inflammation (encephalitis), sleep disturbances, and other conditions that affect brain function. It is also helpful in evaluating unexplained fainting, confusion, or memory lapses.
NCS (Nerve Conduction Study)
About the Test
A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) checks how quickly and effectively your nerves send electrical signals. It is often performed alongside EMG to evaluate nerve damage or dysfunction.
What to Expect
Small electrodes are placed on your skin over the nerves being tested. A controlled electrical impulse is delivered, which may feel like a brief tingling or mild shock. The machine records how fast the signals travel between points. The test is non-invasive and typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of nerves being studied.
How to Prepare
Do not apply lotions or creams on your arms or legs on the day of the test. Wear short sleeves or loose-fitting clothing. Let the staff know if you have any implanted devices like a pacemaker or spinal stimulator.
What It Can Help Diagnose
NCS helps diagnose nerve compression syndromes (like carpal tunnel), peripheral neuropathy (often caused by diabetes), radiculopathy (nerve root problems), sciatica, or nerve injuries from trauma.
Sleep-Deprived EEG
About the Test
This test is a special type of EEG that is done after a period of sleep deprivation. Certain abnormal brain activities — such as those seen in epilepsy — are more likely to appear when the brain is fatigued.
What to Expect
You will be instructed to get little or no sleep the night before the study. Once you arrive at the clinic, the test is performed similarly to a routine EEG. Electrodes are placed on your scalp using paste or a cap, and brain activity is monitored while you rest quietly in a dark room. You may be allowed to nap during the test, as sleep enhances diagnostic accuracy. The entire process usually takes about 1 to 2 hours.
How to Prepare
You will be given specific instructions about how long to stay awake the night before. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or sedating medications. Wash your hair in advance and avoid using any styling products. Have someone accompany you to the clinic, as you may be too tired to drive safely afterward.
What It Can Help Diagnose
This test is particularly effective at detecting seizure activity that may not appear in a standard EEG. It is often used to diagnose epilepsy, especially in cases where routine EEG results were inconclusive.
